If you aren’t much of a haunted house goer I totally get it. I hear it all the time, “why would I pay to get the crap scared out of me!?” For me, it isn’t just about the thrill of getting scared it’s about seeing how real they can make the experience feel. The amount of time and energy that goes into these attractions is insane! So if you’ve never really been into haunted houses I recommend giving them another try! In more recent years they have really up’ed their game and are not just out to scare you but they are trying to put on a show.
With that being said, each haunted house attraction in Denver has it’s own unique twist. Here are my favorite Denver attractions in order!
1. 13th Floor
The 13th Floor is my FAVORITE attraction in Denver so far (stay tuned for a review on the Escape rooms…I’m dying to go!) because they definitely have the best graphics. The make up, the costumes, the props, and the actors—everything is on point. This isn’t your typical black trash bags hanging in a hallway built out of ply wood and 2×4’s with a bad actor popping out of a trashcan, they really take it to the next level.
There are three different parts to this haunted house. They start out by resurrecting classic psychopath characters from our favorite horror movies. You know which ones I’m talking about—Freddy, Jason, Saw, and more. I hadn’t seen anyone do this for a long time and I was SO excited about it. They really bring those characters to life in a fun and scary way. The next two parts of the attraction called The Undead and The Ritual…I’ll let you find out for yourself what happens in those…
Between the walls feeling like they are closing in on you, the ground moving, the life like props, and a different turn at every corner there won’t be a dull moment. If you decide to go to this attraction (which I really recommend) all I’ll say is…watch your heads…
Visit their website for ticket information and more details. They have three different ticket options; General Admission, Fastpass, and Skip the Line. If you don’t like waiting in line general admission will not be for you, I paid a little extra for the Fastpass and it is totally worth it. They are also open every night of the week! http://www.13thfloorhauntedhouse.com/
2018 Review
The 13th Floor has really upped their game this year! They added an escape room, carnival and bar to the attraction. The characters that wander around outside as you wait in line were even more on point this year. Still my favorite haunted house in Denver!
*They are open every night through November 3rd (prices vary depending on the night). And have their annual Black Out attraction on November 9th & 10th! I’ve never been but maybe this will be the year I finally check it out 🙂 You can see their calendar here.
2. Asylum & City of the Dead
The Asylum has been featured on the Discovery Channel for being one of the top haunted house attractions in the U.S. They definitely have a unique twist in the first room you enter. Similar to The Haunted Field of Screams attraction they have you try to figure out how to escape a creepy room before moving on to the haunted house. The only difference is there is a timer and if you don’t find a way to unlock the door you won’t be too thrilled about the outcome, and trust me…it’s not easy to find your way out! http://www.asylumdenver.com/index.html
2018 Review
This year The Asylum and City of the Dead are now one attraction. They basically took the two haunted houses and put them together…which means one LONG haunted house! I liked that they kept the unique parts of each and basically just put them back to back. And lastly, they kept the life size operation game and basketball with decapitated heads which was my favorite part of City of the Dead in the past.
They will be open through Halloween! See their schedule here.
3. Frightmare
Frightmare is an impressive attraction based on the fact that it is family owned and is on their old property just off of Old Wadsworth. This attraction has come a long way in the past couple of years! The only downside is that the length of the haunted house is fairly short compared to other ones in Denver. With that being said, it is still worth it! They take you from their creepy outdoors in the corn to the inside of their eerie barn. But it doesn’t stop there…it wouldn’t be Frightmare without their CLOWN HOUSE!
Frightmare, like the 13th Floor, is open everyday of the week! http://www.thefrightmarecompound.com/

Didn’t make it this year (insert crying emoji)
4. Haunted Field of Screams
Haunted Field of Screams was my favorite haunted house in Denver for years! They were the first to incorporate a themed escape room at the beginning of their haunted house, for a couple of years it was Saw themed and I LOVED it because I was a huge fan of those movies! And since then they have added on two other attractions; Dead Mans Night Maze and Zombie Paintball Massacre. Since the lines can get REALLY long at this attraction I recommend going pretty early if you want to do all 3 parts, because you have to wait in a separate line for each which can take up to 2 hours with general admissions tickets. Luckily they have Fastpasses available if you want to pay the extra money.
This year I decided to just do the Dead Mans Night Maze with my haunted house partner, my sister. We had a blast trying to find our way out of their corn maze filled with creeps popping out of the corn and chasing you down. Since you have to find your way out it can take some time but don’t let that deter you…the dark maze only lit by moonlight adds a completely different element of fear that is really exciting and fun! http://hauntedfieldofscreams.com/
2018 Review
I will be going to Haunted Field of Screams on Halloween night! They have the largest haunted attraction in Denver and this year they added a 4th attraction called Carn Evil! As you’ve probably figured out by now, my sister Lindsey and I try to go to as many haunted houses together each year…and EVERY year she says she doesn’t get scared. BUT she is terrified of clowns…so guess who is taking her to Carn Evil just to watch her pee her pants?! (insert hand up emoji).
5. City of the Dead
I have yet to go to City of the Dead this year but they have never disappointment in the past. The graphics at this haunted house are comparable to the 13th Floor but I noticed that they have less actors. Which is a bummer for a weirdo like me who doesn’t scare easily anymore from overexposure, however, they do a great job despite the fact. They also have fun and creepy games waiting for you at the end of the haunted house including a life size Operation doll, basket ball with decapitated heads, and paint balling zombies. You will have a great time at this attraction! But if you think the scares will only start when you enter the haunted house, think again…there’s something waiting for you in the parking lot.
If you are curious about the creature waiting for you in the parking lot I would play it safe and go on the weekend. Oh and just a heads up, this website has sound! http://cityofthedeadhaunt.com/
