It’s almost my favorite time of year – fall (I swoooooon). I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself but I cannot wait to start adding different elements to my apartment to give it the coziest of vibes. Come next week my place will be transformed!
Since I’m living life on a budget it’s not realistic for me to spend a ton to alter our entire apartment with each holiday or season. I’ve learned how to tweak a few things to satisfy the need for change without over spending – I’m not made of money, friends!
I mainly focus on my living room and entry way since there isn’t much space in our quaint 1 bedroom apartment with a tiny kitchen. But these tips can be used for any room in a larger home.
Warm it up
To start I swap any cooler tones with warm and natural ones. I’ll take down my green and blue accents and replace them with warmer colors like orange and burgundy.
Make it cozy
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of fall? I’m betting you thought of cozying up on the couch with a hot beverage (at least that’s where my mind goes) and a space doesn’t give you that without some comfy blankets and pillows. I can usually find a good price for faux fur or knit throws at TJ Maxx, Home Goods or Target if they have a sale. I will not spend more than twenty-five dollars on a throw blanket…that’s just silly. Throw pillows are the easiest to find and most customize-able at H&M. Buy the plain throw pillows and buy different pillow covers for each season. Since I’m not big on having too much color in my home (or any other aspect of my life like clothing, make up, etc.) I like to offset the few colors I add in with whites, creams and tans during fall. When searching for fall decor inspiration I often come across images of gray and taupe throw blankets and pillows, but I actually prefer to save those for Christmas and focus on warmer tones during fall.
Keep it natural
Adding in wooden accents will accentuate the warmth in your home. I have an obsession with wooden trays, bowls, etc. Adding in these elements will tie everything together and pull in those fall and autumn vibes that we all love.
The perfect scent
I know this will come as a shock to you guys…but I am actually not a huge fan of pumpkin scented candles – gasp! They are wayyy to sweet for my liking. For me, a candle has to be the perfect balance between sweet and earthy. When this time of year comes around I go for candles with a base of sandalwood, amber, teakwood, etc. The only sweet scented candle that I LOVE is called Warm Apple Pie and trust me, it’s delicious! I don’t like to spend much on candles so I usually head to Bath and Body Works when they have a sale and stock up on my favorites. On occasion I’ll splurge for one at Antrhopologie or Madewell but that’s rare.
Dried Plants
Usually I have some kind of dried out greenery on my entry way shelf but I think this year I’ll be switching it out with dried baby’s breath, cotton or hay like grass.
Metal Accents
I add in gold or copper tones here and there. I love to use metal accents to give the room a little…dimension? Not sure what word I am looking for here but adding warm metal tones to a room adds a nice touch.
Lastly, PUMPKINS
The final and very necessary touch would obviously be little pumpkins. I love getting real mini white pumpkins but I’m still on the hunt for the perfect faux gold one to put out each year.
Stay tuned for the finished look mid-September! I will share all of the items I end up getting and what summer items I replaced them with. In the mean time, check out my fall home Pinterest for to see all my inspiration!
Byyeeeeeee.
